Accessibility
How this website is built to be usable by everyone.
Last updated: March 26, 2026
I'm committed to making this website accessible to everyone, regardless of ability or technology. As a UX designer, I believe good design is inclusive design. I aim to meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standard.
Here are the specific steps taken to make this site accessible:
- Semantic HTMLThe site is built with proper elements like <header>, <main>, <nav>, <footer>, and <section> so screen readers can understand the page structure.
- Descriptive labelsAll interactive elements (buttons, links, icons) have accessible labels so you know what each element does, even if you can't see the icon.
- Decorative elements hiddenDecorative SVGs and shapes are hidden from screen readers so they don't interrupt your experience.
- Keyboard navigationYou can navigate the entire site using a keyboard. The video player supports keyboard shortcuts: space to play/pause, arrow keys to seek, M to mute, F for fullscreen.
- Reduced motion supportIf you have "reduce motion" turned on in your device settings, all scroll-triggered and entrance animations are disabled across every component on the site.
- Live announcementsWhen you copy the email address, a screen reader will announce "Email copied!" automatically.
- Language declaredThe page language is set to English so screen readers use the correct pronunciation.
- Safe external linksAll links that open in a new tab include security attributes to protect your browsing session.
- Heading hierarchyHeadings follow a logical order (h1, h2, h3) so screen reader users can quickly scan the page.
I'm always working to improve. Here are areas I'm aware of and actively addressing:
- The bounce animation on scroll hints respects "reduce motion" but doesn't have an explicit pause button for users who haven't enabled that system preference (WCAG 2.2.2).
- Focus rings on interactive elements meet WCAG AA requirements. The enhanced AAA criteria for focus ring size and contrast ratio have not been fully evaluated.
- The email contact function uses three different accessible names across the site ("Get in touch", "Copy Email", and an icon-only footer link). I'm working on aligning these.
This site is designed with reference to the following guidelines and laws:
- WCAG 2.2: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, Level AA
- AODA: Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (Ontario, Canada)
- ACA: Accessible Canada Act
- EAA: European Accessibility Act (EU)
- ADA: Americans with Disabilities Act (U.S.)
- EN 301 549: European standard for ICT accessibility
